John has been an advocate for Pukekohe High School teams, Counties Manukau Hockey, Midlands, and Auckland Supercity since 1999. He coached the school’s 1st XI hockey team from 2000 – 2020 and was the teacher in charge of hockey for over 20 years. During this time, John was the convenor for Counties Manukau Secondary School Hockey and umpired at all levels, including National Secondary School Tournaments, and officiated New Zealand test matches in his province. John was also the teacher in charge of cricket where he coached various teams, including being a player-coach of the 1st XI, and organized cricket tours to Australia. He was the teacher in charge, coach, and manager of the Pukekohe Wrestling programme along with managing the school’s Gymnastics team and led several of their football teams.
