Epsom Girls Premier Netball Team created history last week by winning the UNISS Netball Tournament – a first for Epsom Girls Grammar School netball in the 20 plus years the tournament has been played.
UNISS is the upper north island qualifying tournament for NZSS Nationals and while the major goal is to qualify for Nationals, Epsom Girls carried their strong form from winning the Auckland Netball Premier Grade final two weeks earlier into the UNISS tournament.
A tough semi-final win against Saint Kentigern was excellent preparation for a finals rematch with Mt Albert Grammar who Epsom drew with in the quarter-finals. In windy conditions, it was a tightly contested match with only 1 point separating the teams at the first break, 2 points in the second break and three points into the last quarter, all in Epsom’s favour.
It would be Epsom’s strong conditioning and performance levels that would see them dominate the score line in the fourth quarter 11-5 and win the final 31-22.
Killarney Morey was named MVP of the Final and made the tournament team along with Captain Greer Sinclair and Vice-Captain Bianca Nagaiya.
The team now prepare for the Pita Pit NZ Secondary Schools Netball Championships which are being held in Timaru, 9-12 October.
