In what proved to be an amazing evening of sport for Saint Kentigern on Wednesday, the first major win of the evening came from the Girls Football 1st XI team. In a first for the team, having already topped the College Sport Auckland season, they put in a stellar performance to beat Baradene 3-0 to win the Auckland Provincial Championships. The team was unbeaten throughout the season with just two draws against Rangitoto College and Mt Albert Grammar School during the season.
Played in front of a supportive crowd on a cold, crisp night, the match got off to a strong start on the Seddon Field at Western Springs. Used to playing on grass, the artificial turf was a new surface for both teams as they settled into play. From a penalty, Hannah Blake was first to score taking Saint Kentigern to a 1-0 lead at half time. The girls came back firing on all cylinders in the second half and a goal from Amy Waters, followed by a scorcher from Hannah in the last two minutes of the game, secured the win. Hannah was named MVP for the game.
Hannah and fellow team player, Amy Waters bring a strong skill set to the game with their representative playing experience. Hannah plays for the NZU20 team and Amy for NZU17.
Led by captain, Tate McGregor, this is a team who set out at the start of the season with a goal in mind, and through sheer determination and hard work have achieved it. Their training included a robust strength and conditioning programme, technical and tactical field sessions and sports psychology.
The team now looks forward to the upcoming National competition in Taupo during tournament week.
