An Auckland school is closing in on its target of having every student playing a sport.
St Paul’s College’s latest census data showed sport participation was now more than 70 per cent.
New Zealand Secondary Schools Sports Council’s 2016 census showed the national average of students involved in school sports was 55 per cent.
St Paul’s sport coordinator Dave McDermott said it was the school’s focus on non-contact sports that had seen participation swell.
“St Paul’s always knew the benefits of sport and traditionally excelled at sports like rugby league, especially,” McDermott said.
St Paul’s identified non-contact sports as a gap where many students were being left behind.
