The COVID-19 Minister made an announcement on Friday 25 February regarding school sport and vaccination requirements.
At that time the Government indicated that they intended to change the Health Order to allow all students to participate in school sport regardless of their vaccination status.
Sport New Zealand have issued new secondary school sport and recreation guidelines. These inform all secondary schools and venue providers that the new legislation will take effect from 11:59pm on Saturday 12 March. The new guidelines/ information can be found in the Sport NZ guidance for school sport and recreation link below.
In anticipation of this updated guidance, the College Sport Auckland Board met on Friday morning to discuss our next steps.
Following legal advice, the College Sport Auckland Vaccination Policy will be suspended at 11:59pm on Saturday 12 March. The suspension of the policy means:
- My Vaccine Passes will not be required for school students participating in a school representative team, on or off school sites. This includes all College Sport Auckland fixtures and events. This does not apply to school students who are participating in a community event or competition as individuals in a community team, but it does apply where a school team is entered into a community sport/recreation competition.
Schools no longer need to check the vaccination status of students participating in a CSA sanctioned competition.
All other requirements of the Covid Protection Framework still apply, and in particular, gathering limits.
College Sport Auckland appreciates the efforts of all schools who have continued to support the provision of secondary school sport in a context affected by changing Public Health and Government guidelines.

Full vaccination a condition of eligibility for representatives and staff involved with College Sport Auckland Competitions
Today, College Sport Auckland informed Principals of participating schools that from January 10 2022, students and staff who want to be involved with Auckland secondary school sanctioned sporting competitions, need to be fully vaccinated.
CEO, Mark Barlow said, “Before making this decision CSA had consulted with Principals and received overwhelming support for such a step. While this follows School Sport NZ’s approach, the CSA Board wanted to provide early assurance and direction to students and schools in Auckland. The health and safety of anyone involved with a sanctioned secondary school sport in Auckland is a primary obligation that CSA takes seriously.”
CSA Board Chair, Tim O’Connor said, “COVID-19 poses an ongoing risk to the health and wellbeing of individuals in our community including students, coaches and managers involved with secondray school sport. The addition of the new Bylaw pertaining to COVID-19 vaccinations gives all our schools clarification and certainty before the start of 2022 sporting competitions.”
Monday 15 November
College Sport Auckland has made the decision to cancel all remaining Term Four sanctioned competitions and events for the remainder of 2021.
We regret being in this position, but ongoing COVID- related restrictions around gathering sizes and uncertainty around when team sports may be able to resume have formed the basis of this decision.
Whilst Year 9 and Year 10 students may return to campus on Wednesday 17 November, some schools are rostering year groups home to reduce numbers and comply with the Health Order and Government guidelines. With only 3-4 weeks left of Term 4 there is insufficient time for teams to be able to train and/or to put them in a situation where they are safe to play. We also appreciate that this is an important time of the year for internal and external examinations and we respect that the academic priority of schools must take precedence.
You will appreciate this is not a decision College Sport Auckland wishes to make, but good sense does need to prevail with the circumstances we are faced with across Auckland.
College Sport Auckland Young Sports Person of the Year Awards (YSPOTY)
The 2021 College Sport YSPOTY awards are being announced on our website and social media platforms this year. Unfortunately, it has not been possible to hold a physical awards dinner. The overall winners will be announced live on Thursday 25 November.

Wednesday 15 September
Following the Government’s announcement that Auckland will remain at Alert Level 4 until at least Wednesday 22 September, College Sport Auckland have made the decision to cancel all remaining winter sports fixtures.
This follows yesterday’s announcement that Cycling Nationals in Timaru have been cancelled. The only code yet to confirm the status of secondary school nationals is basketball.
When Auckland does drop from Alert Level 4 we can expect this will be followed by at least one week at Alert Level 3. If this best case scenario does eventuate that would leave 2 days for competition games to be played. This allows no time for teams to train and/or to put them in a situation where they are safe to play physically.
You will appreciate this is not a decision our organisation wishes to make, but good sense does need to prevail with the circumstances we are faced with across Auckland.

The College Sport Auckland (CSA) Board has met several times under Alert Level 4 to discuss the various possibilities of completing CSA sanctioned winter sports codes this term. The Government deciding to leave Auckland in Alert Level 4 and the length of time in lockdown has severely impacted on our ability to provide viable options to conclude winter sports competitions in a manner we would all find acceptable.
There is considerable uncertainty about when Auckland schools will be able to return to campus. Given the uncertainty and that we are now in week 7 of the term, CSA has made the difficult decision to end the season for all non-premier sport. All current placings in non-premier sport, including all junior grades with incomplete leagues, will be recognised as the end of season placings.
Below is a summary of the remaining games in the various Premier grades (and in Knockout Cup competitions where finalists have been determined) which could take place if schools return to campus before the end of Term 3 and Government regulations permit. This is a less than ideal situation to be in as we all have a vested interest in secondary school sport and want to provide our students with opportunities to participate and compete. Therefore, while it is highly unlikely that any winter sporting Premier competitions will be able to proceed, the following fixtures could take place if Ministry of Health guidelines permit.
Please also note:
- If Auckland’s alert levels drop very quickly to a point where more Premier sport could be played, we will review that at that time.
- Winter Premier sport competitions will finish as the term does on Friday 1 October.
- Summer sport competitions will be programmed to start in Term 4.

Tuesday 24 August
Following the Government’s decision to extend Alert Level 4 until at least 11.59pm on Tuesday 31 August, all College Sport Auckland competitions and events remain on-hold. A decision regarding the resumption of winter sport will be made when the situation becomes clearer.
Although this is disappointing news, it may be possible to resume some school sport towards the end of Term 3.
School sport in Auckland can only resume at Alert Level 2 or lower.
School Sport New Zealand has also announced that all sanctioned events on its calendar until Monday 6 September have been cancelled. This includes Winter Tournament Week, which will be a huge disappointment to the many thousands of students who participate.
Wednesday 18 August
Following the Government announcement that Auckland is now at Alert Level 4, all College Sport Auckland competitions and events are on hold until further notice. An update will be provided as soon as possible.
At all times College Sport Auckland will follow the advice and guidance issued by the Government.
