Ultimate Senior Outdoor Championships

Perfect weather with almost no wind greeted the 21 competing teams at the 2021 College Sport Auckland Senior Outdoor Ultimate Championships on Sunday at Bruce Pulman Park. Over 7 hours, teams from all over Auckland threw, hucked, dived for, and caught a 175gm plastic disc with skill, grace and enthusiasm.

As the competition moved towards the playoffs, the experienced schools brought their A game with the semi-finals in both the Girls and Open Divisions featuring schools who have been playing ultimate for many years.

The Girls Division final saw Epsom Girls Grammar take on Avondale College. Full of club players and two New Zealand Under 20 representatives, the Epsom team were at an advantage and they hammered that home with a comprehensive 8-1 win.

In the Open Division, Auckland Grammar School and Takapuna Grammar School met in a repeat of the 2020 Indoor final. This one went the other way, although it was close for the whole game, with Auckland Grammar School taking the 7-4 victory.

With Ultimate being completely self-refereed, the Spirit of the Game is a vital part of the sport and the Spirit of the Game Award is marked by teams scoring their opponents after each match. This year Avondale College won the SOTG Award in both the Girls and Open Divisions. Roshni Oberoi (Avondale College) and Jamie Craske (Selwyn College) were selected by the players as the Most Valuable Players.

The next competitions on the College Sport Auckland Ultimate calendar are the Senior Open Indoor Championships on Sunday 20 June and the Senior Girls Indoor Championships on Sunday 4 July. We look forward to a huge turnout of schools at these events, which are set to be the biggest ever.
